Abstract (EN)

Childhood traumatic experiences and depression is one of the important public health problems which affect individuals' health negatively in terms of physical, physiological and social life. It is known that children who exposed to traumatic experiences are at risk in terms for psychiatric problems seen in their future life. In this study it is aimed to examine the relationship between depression symptoms and childhood traumas in adults applied to The Healthy Life Center found in Elazığ. This study which is descriptive and cross-sectional is done with 370 people aged 18 and over who applied to The Healthy Life Centers founded all around the city of Elazığ. The survey form prepared by researchers, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and Beck's Depression Inventory were used in this study. The survey was made by researchers by meeting face to face. The data were recorded in the statistical package program and Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis, Spearman Correlation tests were performed in statistical analysis. The average age of the participants is 34.53 ± 10.00, 57.8 ages % of them are women. While participants total point the scale of childhood traumas median is 38,43±13.91, Beck's Depression Inventory point median is 14.79±11.49. Among the participants, the incidence of childhood trauma is 43.0%, physical abuse 33.2%, emotional abuse 34.9%, sexual abuse 11.9%, physical neglect 47.3%, emotional neglect 31.1% and depression symptoms 34.9%. In addition in our study, a positive significant relationship was found between the childhood traumas of participants and their depression levels.(p<0.05). As a result, It was observed that approximately half of the participants in the study had childhood trauma and approximately one third had symptoms of depression. It was found that as the incidence of childhood trauma increased, the symptoms of depression increased. Preventive treatment and rehabilitative services should be planned with a multidisciplinary approach by evaluating risk factors that may cause childhood traumas and depression.
