Abstract (EN)

Internal combustion engines have been used for a variety of purposes since 150 years. Like the technology that develops every field, internal combustion engines also benefit from new technological developments day by day and changing. In internal combustion engines, variable valve train systems are an important technological innovation that has a great impact on engine performance and engine efficiency, and is applied to internal combustion engines that have been put on the market in recent years. Manufacturers are using variable valve system mechanisms that provide greater flexibility in the valve train system for the need for powertrains that requires to be suitable for recently applied strict emission legislations and powertrains that needs to be suitable for different operating conditions for new generation vehicles with most efficient way. The concept of electro hydraulic valve train system is a design that can respond to this requirement and is a concept that manufacturers have been working on in recent years. According to the United States Department of Energy Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office work, the variable valve train system mechanism provides an average of 3% to 4% fuel consumption advantage as one of the four main technologies that provide fuel consumption and emission reduction in internal combustion engines. This study demonstrates the mechanisms of variable valve train system in internal combustion engines and shows the strategies and design types that manufacturers have been following. As a most advanced technology in the variable valve train system mechanisms, the hydraulic valve train system designs are presented and the results of the simulation studies on a selected design are examined. The research results show that the variable valve train system as a technology that improves performance, reduces emissions and reduces fuel consumption in internal combustion engines can be implemented to a reference engine with an electro hydraulic concept. In the study, valve performances which are referenced in the simulation results were obtained and the results were examined. Information was given about the dynamic effects that the system was exposed to and the results were evaluated by simulating the temperature-related change of the system which is one of these dynamic effects.
