Text linguistic analysis of Elif Şafak's novel 'Pinhan'

It has been observed that traditional text decoding techniques have been abandoned, especially in the last years. It has been determined that a very important part of the studies carried out and continuing in the last years and later are textlinguistics studies and researches. Textlinguistics enables texts that contain semantic connotations, cannot be deciphered in the first reading, and have serious linguistic richness, to make more qualified analyzes by text solvers. Textlinguistics; It tries to reveal whether a structure consisting of words and sentences is a text with the basic criteria it contains. These basic criteria can be listed as consistency, coherence, acceptability, purposefulness, contingency, wisdom and intertextual relationship. Many of Elif Şafak's novels have been the subject of study before. In some of these, it was determined that word groups and vocabulary studies were made in any of the author's novels. This first novel of Elif Şafak, one of the most important writers of modern Turkish literature, or more precisely, a novel has been examined with a textlinguistic method for the first time. In this study, Pinhan, the first novel of Elif Şafak, was examined in the context of cohesion and consistency, which is one of the sub-branch of linguistics. In the first chapter, information about coherence is given and the text is analyzed in terms of cohesion. The reference, elliptical structures, substitution, linking elements and lexical coherence included in cohesion constitute the content of the study. In this context, cohesion in the novel has been examined under these five sub-titles. All of these sub-headings give information about linguistic structures related to the text. In the second part, the text was analyzed under the title of consistency. In this part, the transformations in the work, cause-effect relationships, the language and style of the work, the suitability of time, place and events in the work are examined. Then, general evaluations were made about the consistency of the novel. With this textlinguistic analysis of Elif Şafak's novel Pinhan, it is aimed to reveal the elements of coherence, to examine the text in the context of consistency and to contribute to the studies carried out in this direction.
