Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted as a prospective, randomized controlled trial to investigate the effect of preparatory education on colonoscopy quality. The study included 306 patients (150 experiments, 156 controls) who were admitted to the endoscopy unit of a training and research hospital of the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate between June and December 2018. The data of study were collected by "Colonoscopy Data Collection Form ".Descriptive statistical methods (mean, standard deviation, frequency) and Kruskal Wallis test, Mann Whitney U test, Student's t test, Chi square test, Fisher's Exact test, Fisher Freeman Halton test and Continuity Correction, Pearson correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. The results were evaluated at 95% confidence interval and p <0,05 significance level. The mean age of the patients was 55.27 ± 15, 55.2% (n = 169) were male and 54.9% (n = 168) were primary school graduates. Before the colonoscopy, face-to-face information presentation and pre-procedure phone reminder interview increased the BBPS score and bowel preparation quality (p <0.05), increased the cecal intubation rate (p <0,05), did not affect the cecal intubation time and the time of withdrawal (p > 0,05), it did not significantly increase the detection rates of polyps (p> 0,05), increased the patient satisfaction and their compliance with the preparatory practices. As a result, in order to improve patient compliance to colonoscopy and increase the quality of colonoscopy, patient preparation can be given face to face training, in addition to written information, an informative brochure can be given and information can be made by phone calls.
