Internet over powerlines

Internet over powerline is using the powerlines to bring the internet to a home or office from a powerline internet service or distributing an internet connection in a home or building to all electrical outlets. Powerline Internet Service Providers are becoming available in some European Countries. Tests have shown this system to be fast, reliable and secure.In this thesis, the standarts, characteristics, technologies, products and the developments in the powerline communications are examined.The advantages of using existing electrical power grids as a part of communication system is examined in detail. The outcome of the reserches and comparisons made in European Countries on the channel characteristics, performance and interference is provided. The limitations on the data transfer, drawbacks, service quality in the powerline networking are also investigated.All products with HomePlug certificate summarize the existing powerline communication. The point to be noted is that each product hase different technology. Because data transfer rate has reached 14Mbps over powerlines this technology is becoming very important. The powerline network has advantages over the other wireless and home Networks as easy installation, use of existing ac outlets, cheapness, safety, data security and high transfer rate. Thus the powerline is also a candidate for xDLS and broadband internet services for serving consumers.
