Investigation of mechanical properties of epoxy based composite material reinforced by M7C3 carbides

Polymer matrix composite materials are widely used in various industries such as food, automotive, defense, aerospace, textile, and sports equipment. To enhance the strength properties of polymer matrix composites, reinforcing elements such as glass, carbon, and aramid fibers are commonly used. Additionally, polymer matrix materials are modified with different particles due to their low properties in terms of flexural strength, rigidity, and wear resistance. Particle reinforcement significantly affects the mechanical and physical properties of polymer materials. In this study, polymer matrix and particle-reinforced composites were prepared using epoxy resin. Chromium carbide, bronze, and grease were used as additive materials. Chromium carbide particles with a size of 75 microns were utilized. Detailed wear and compression tests were performed on the prepared samples, and SEM images were taken. In addition to our main reinforcement, chromium carbide, bronze and grease were added in our study. The experimental work initially started with samples reinforced only with chromium carbide, and later bronze and grease were added to increase the wear resistance and reduce the friction coefficient, and the effects of these additives on the materials were examined.
