Iconographic effects as cultural image in Eren Eyüboğlu's painting art

Iconography has maintained its importance in the art of painting from the beginning of the Christianity history until the period when the comprehension against the traditional understanding of painting developed. In the historical process, developments in art history and innovations in painting technique have also affected iconography in terms of content, form, meaning and expression. The works of Eren Eyüboğlu, which are the subject of research in the thesis, are accepted as the first predecessor of modern iconographic painting in Anatolia. It gains importance with the assumption that Turkish painting in the process of modernization represents the transitional period. Because the works of Eren Eyüboğlu are influenced by the Western Christian culture, where she was born and raised, and the Anatolian culture, where she lived later. In this context, the aim of the thesis is to examine the meaning layers of the works produced by the artist with the reflections of the two cultures, both in terms of iconography and in the context of the elements of contemporary painting art. Eren Eyüboğlu is one of the pioneer female artists who produce works with a contemporary understanding in Turkish painting. The effects of the cultures that Eren Eyüboğlu has been influenced by throughout her early youth have been tried to be examined with an iconographic approach. In the thesis, the data obtained from the works of the artist were evaluated according to Greimas' semiotics and Panofsky's iconological analysis method.
