Abstract (EN)

The first aim of this study was to determine reliability and validity of the Parental Involvement Questionnaire which measures parental involvement in the career of young athletes, which has been developed by Martin Lee and Sandra Maclean (1997) and has reorganized by Wuerth et al. (2004). The second purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the level of parental involvement in sport, self-esteem, and perception of success in adolescent basketball players. In the first study about adapting to Turkish adolescent basketball players of the Parental Involvement Questionnaire, the sample is consist of 272 basketball players which are 44 girls and 228 boys. As a result of the confirmatory factor analysis, the fit indices for this scale are calculated as χ² / sd= 98.10/50 = 1.96; RMSEA = 0.060, SRMR = 0.063, GFI = 0.94, AGFI = 0.91, NFI = 0.89; NNFI = 0.92, CFI = 0.94. In addition to these findings, Cronbach's alpha coefficients of the scale were also found 0.83 for directive behavior and 0.68 for positive emotional support. In the second part of the study, it was to examine the relationship between the level of parental involvement in sport, self-esteem, and perception of success in adolescent basketball players. For this study, the sample consist of 450 basketball players which are 80 girls and 370 boys. Participants completed the Parental Involvement Questionnaire, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and Perception of Success Questionnaire. In the analysis of the data, it has been used descriptive analysis, independent sample t-test, Pearson product-moment correlation and multiple regression analysis with stepwise. When the results are examined, it has been found that the junior team's (U-13) players had higher average scores than under 15 team's (U-15) players in task orientation, directive behavior, and positive emotional support. When correlations between variables were examined, it was found that task orientation and self-esteem had statistically positive and significant relationship with positive emotional support. In addition, It has been observed that ego orientation had a positive and significant relationship with positive emotional support and directive behavior. It was determined that positive emotional support and directive behavior significantly predicted task orientation, ego orientation, and self-esteem.
