Forgiveness and perceived social support in teenagers

Abstract (EN)

In this research, the aim is to investigate the relationship between forgiveness and perceived social support in teenagers in terms of various variables (gender, high school type, birth order, education level of parents, expressed relative communication and expressed family, friends, teacher support). The population of the research consists of high school students studying in Kocaeli province in 2019-2020 education year and the research sample consists of 422 students who are chosen with appropriate sampling method from four different high school types in Darıca, Kocaeli and who filled in the scales voluntarily. The data was gathered with "Personal Information Form", "Forgiveness Scale for Teenagers" and "Perceived Social Support Scale". Also, in order to analyse the data, pearson product-moment correlation coefficient technique, regression analysis, one-way analysis of variance, T-test, Welch test, Scheffe test, Tamhane's T2 test and Levene statistics were used. p<.05 significance level was taken as criteria to interpret whether the outcome was significant or not. According to the findings obtained from the research, it was found that there is a significant relation in a positive way between teenagers' forgiveness tendency and perceived social support points. In addition, it was determined that there is a significant and positive relation between perceived social support and empathy establishment aspect of forgiveness and again, between perceived social support and forgiveness tendency. Also, it was found that there is significant relation in a negative way between perceived social support and the aspect of maintaining anger and revenging. There is no significant relation between the aspect of components of forgiveness and perceived social support. The forgiveness tendency of males, the components of forgiveness and revenging points are significantly higher than the female students of the same term. Moreover, the differences of points between the empathy establishment and maintaining anger aspects of forgiveness tendency are found not to be significant for the male and female students of the same term. Also, it was found that social support points perceived by female students are significantly higher than male students of the same term and the difference between forgiveness tendency points are not significant for male and female students of the same term. In terms of high school type and the average of forgiveness tendency points, there is a significant relation and forgiveness tendency points of teenagers differentiate significantly and positively for the science high school students among the science high school, Anatolian high, private high and vocational high school students. According to the birth order and parents' education level and according to the average of perceived social support points, there is no significant differences. According to the expressed relative communication and the average of perceived social support points, there is a significant difference. It is differentiated significantly in favour of the good side between teenagers labelling relative communication as bad or average and teenagers labelling it as good. Between the expressed family, friends and teacher social support and perceived family, friends and teacher social support points, it was found to be a significant difference and considering the teenagers defining the expressed family, friends and teacher support as little or average and the ones defining them as much; it differentiates significantly in favour of much.
