Investigation of the relationship of smartphone addiction with social exclusion (ostracism) in adolescents

Investigation of the relationship between smartphone Addiction and Social Exclusion (Ostracism) in Adolescents Objective: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between smartphone addiction and social exclusion of students attending high school. Material and Method: The study group of our study consisted of 502 students studying in 10 high schools in Diyarbakır city center and Çınar district in 2019-2020 academic year. The data of the research were collected by means of "Smart Phone Addiction Scale" and "Adolescence Ostracism (Social Exclusion) Scale". The research is a quantitative research and is designed in accordance with the relational screening model, which is one of the general screening model types. The data obtained in the study were analyzed using the SPSS package program. In the analysis of the research data, Mann-Whitney U was used for two independent groups, Kruskal-Wallis for multiple group comparisons, Chi-square analysis and Spearman's Rho correlation analysis were used to analyze the relationships between categorical variables. In the whole study, p <0.05 value was accepted as statistically significant. Results: The correlation coefficient between social exclusion and smartphone addiction was not significant in Rho = 0,049 (p = 0,451). As the usage time of adolescents increases, social relationship development increases (X2 = 35,26; p <0,001). Rural adolescents were more likely to be smartphone addicted than urban adolescents (p = 0.035). A low and negative correlation was found between overuse and endurance scores and social exclusion (R = -0,297; p = 0.030 and R = -0.344; p = 0.003 respectively). The risk of adolescents who are neglected by their environment is high in smartphone addiction (R = 0.446; p <0.001). Conclusion: According to the results obtained in the study, the relationship between smartphone addiction and social exclusion was not found in adolescents. However, there were differences in addiction levels according to the place of residence, education level and success level. Keywords: Addiction, Smartphone addiction, Social exclusion, Adolescent.
