The association of traumatic childhood experiences and sense of self with academic success in adolescents

The aim of this study was to investigate the association of traumatic childhood experiences and sense of self with academic success in adolescents (14-17 years of age). The sample of the study was composed of 14 to 17 years old adolescents studying at the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades of basic high schools during the academic year 2016-2017 in Alanya, Antalya. In the study, the socio-demographic characteristics of the adolescents were collected with ''Personal Information Form'' developed by researchers, depression level was evaluated with ''Beck Depression Inventory'', self-esteem level was assessed with ''Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale'', and traumatic experiences in childhood was evaluated with ''Childhood Trauma Questionnaire''. This study was designed as a relational screening model. Obtained data were analyzed with SPSS software program. According to the results, we found significant associations of both gender and school grade, which were among the personal and demographic variables, with childhood trauma questionnaire scores.
