Career decision-making diffuculties in adolescents: The role of familial perfectionism, intolerance of uncertainty and irrational professional beliefs

Today, the preparation of the individual for career choice includes a multi-faceted process. Career development is a process that starts from childhood and continues throughout life. Therefore, the career decision-making process is one of the most basic developmental tasks for adolescents. Making the right career decision will help the individual cope with a limited number of career decision-making difficulties throughout his life. It is thought that career decision making consists of a multifaceted structure and is affected by many factors. In this context, the aim of the research is; The aim of this study is to test the relationship between familial criticism, familial expectation, intolerance of uncertainty and irrational professional beliefs, and career decision difficulties through a hypothetical model. The study group of the research consists of a total of 470 high school students, 135 male and 335 female, continuing their education in various cities, especially in Erzincan in the 2020-21 academic year. In the research, Career Decision-Making Difficulties Scale (KKVGÖ), Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (BTS-12), The Scale of Thoughts on Choosing a Profession (MSİDÖ), Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (ÇBMÖ-F) and Personal Information Form were used to collect data. The relational screening model was used in the research and the proposed hypothetical model was tested using the structural equation model. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis was used to determine the relations of the variables with each other. According to the correlation analysis, it was revealed that all the variables in the model showed positive relationships with each other. According to the structural equation modeling, it was determined that family expectations significantly predicted students' career decision-making difficulties through familial criticism, intolerance to uncertainty and irrational professional thoughts. It has been determined that familial criticism indirectly predicts career decision-making difficulties and intolerance to uncertainty and irrational professional thoughts mediate this effect. These findings were discussed in the context of the relevant literature and suggestions were presented.
