The relationship between adolescents' use of social media, self-esteem and psychological well-being

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this research; To examine the relationship between social media use in adolescents and self-esteem and psychological well-being. For this purpose, the relationships between socio-demographic variables and dependent variables (social media use, self-esteem and psychological well-being) were examined; It was investigated whether there is any difference between the groups formed on the basis of socio-demographic variables in terms of dependent variable levels. It was also examined whether social media use and psychological well-being predicted self-esteem. The research was carried out with the method of questionnaire. To determine social media usage level of the participants in order to validity and reliability study of Turkey, Singh et al (2013) which was prepared by the 'Social Media Usage Scale', Çuhadaroğlu for determining self-esteem level (1986) adapted to Turkish 'Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale 'Psychological Well-being Scale' made by Telef (2013), a Turkish reality and reliability study, was used to determine the psychological well-being levels of the participants. The sample of the study consists of 150 individuals who study at various high schools in Izmir. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS 22 computer based statistics program. Crombach Alpha analysis was applied to determine whether the data are reliable or not. Inferential analyzes were made using the principal components method used in the study. According to the findings of the research, it is seen that the use of social media affects self-esteem and there is a moderate negative relationship between social media use and self-esteem. Likewise, it is seen that social media use affects psychological well-being and there is a moderate positive correlation between social media use and psychological well-being. Finally, it was found that the concept of self-esteem affects psychological well-being and there is a moderate positive correlation between self-esteem and psychological well-being.
