Loneliness, psychological resilience, social support and social appearance anxiety in adolescents

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between loneliness, psychological resilience, social support and social appearance anxiety in adolescents, and to investigate whether social support and psychological resilience have mediating roles between loneliness and social appearance anxiety. The participants of the study are consisted of 521 students aged between from various high schools 13 and 18. Data were collected from project based Anatolian high schools in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul. "Personal Information Form", "Social Appearance Anxiety Scale", "Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale", "U.C.L.A. Loneliness Scale" and "Brief Psychological Resilience Scale" were used. Frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, correlation analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis techniques were used in the analysis of the research data. As a result of the research, the correlations between loneliness, social support, psychological resilience and social appearance anxiety were significant at .01 level. The fit indexes of the path model of the variables are X2 = 0.213, df = 1, X2 / df = 0.213, p = 0.64. Other fit indexes are RMSEA= 0,000, TLI=1,000, CFI=1,000 ve SRMR=0,004. According to these results, model-data fit is good for all values. Loneliness is a significant predictive variable of psychological resilience, social support and social appearance anxiety. Psychological resilience is a significant predictive variable of social apperance anxiety. But, social support is not a significant predictor of social apperance anxiety. Psychological resilience has a partial mediating role between loneliness and social appearance anxiety. Loneliness and social appearance anxiety levels of girls were found to be higher. The level of psychological resilience was higher in boys. There is no diffence about social support levels in terms of gender.
