Evaluation of the elbow carring angle in adults: A morphometric analysis

Objective: The aim of our study is to evaluate the relationship between the elbow carrying angle, which prevents the forearm from rubbing on the hips during walking and is important in the smooth execution of the walking cycle, and the biiliac diameter, especially defined as the pelvic width, and to reveal its connection with anthropometric measurements. Material and Methods: The research was conducted as a cross-sectional study between February 2023 and April 2023, with 236 healthy adults (113 females, 123 males) aged 18-35 who voluntarily participated in the study. Height, body weight, arm length, forearm length, arm span length, biacromial diameter, biiliac diameter, elbow diameter and elbow carrying angle of these individuals were measured and their BMI was calculated. The carrying angle was analyzed with anthropometric measurements. Results: We obtained, it was concluded that females's carrying angles have greater values than males. It was determined that the biiliac diameter had a moderate positive relationship with the right elbow carrying angle in female and both sides in male. A moderate positive relationship was observed between right elbow carrying angle and body weight in both genders. Positive and significant correlations were detected between the right elbow carrying angle and BMI and right elbow diameter of males. Conclusion: Knowing the carrying angle values and revealing their relationship with anthropometric measurements; we think that it may be useful in the treatment of various elbow disorders, in the surgical planning of elbow reconstructions and in the design of elbow prosthesis.
