Investigation of the determinant role of the drive for muscularity and self-esteem in male athletes

The aim of this research is to carry out the current study in order to evaluate the self-esteem levels of male athletes in Turkey due to body image dissatisfaction and the relationship of this situation with muscularity. The study group of the research was realized with the voluntary participation of 320 male athletes who continued their active sports life in the 2020-2021 season. The selection of the study group was determined according to the easily accessible sampling technique (Yıldırım & Şimşek, 2011) considering the accessibility aspect of all athletes in the provinces included in the research. The data of the research were collected through the form including the "Personal Information Form", the "Drive for Muscularity Scale" and the "Self-Esteem Scale". In order to find answers to the problem statement and sub-problems of the research, the relationships between the demographic characteristics in the personal information form that sheds light on the sub-problems and their scores were examined in the light of the data obtained after the "Drive for Muscularity Scale " and "Self-Esteem Scale" were applied. SPSS 22.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences, Chicago, Illinois, United States) computer program was used for the statistical analysis of the data obtained from the scales. It was tested whether there was a significant relationship between the scores obtained from the parents and the independent variables of the study. As a result of the application, the data sets were examined one by one and the scales that were filled in incorrectly and incompletely, and the data determined as a result of the extreme value analyzes were excluded from the analysis and analyzes were made on the remaining data. When the results of the research are examined, there is no statistically significant difference between the body mass index of the sub-dimensions of self-esteem, muscularity-oriented attitudes and muscle-building behaviors. a relationship has been found.
