Views and awareness of parents literacy practices in early childhood

This research was carried out by selecting 36-72 month old children attending any pre-school institution, whether private or state, in İstanbul in the 2021-2022 academic year, with 'Criterion Sampling' from the 'Purposeful Sampling' methods of 10 married mothers and 10 fathers (n=20) who are literate and residing in İstanbul. Answers were given to the semi-structured interview form questions titled "Parents' Views on Early Literacy Practices in Early Childhood" developed for the research and prepared by taking expert opinion, 'Parent Demographic Information Form' questions and 'Children's Early Literacy Environments Information Form' questions, and by examining the views of mothers and fathers on early literacy practices in early childhood and by examining the views of mothers and fathers on 'early literacy' and how they define the concepts of 'early literacy skills', their thoughts on the importance of supporting early literacy skills, what they do inside and outside the home to support early literacy skills and how they interpret their children's motivation for these studies, their views on their own level of competence and the level of cooperation between their spouses in supporting early literacy skills, and a whether they need support, what they pay attention to when choosing books that support early literacy skills, their views on family engagement activities that support early literacy skills, and what they think about the effects of the pandemic (COVID-19) on children's early literacy skills were examined.
