The relationship between early maladaptive schemas and dysfunctional schema coping modes with dominance and submissiveness in romantic relationship

In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between early maladaptive schema and dysfunctional schema coping modes with dominance and submissiveness in romantic relationship. The sample of the study includes 731 (408 female and 317 male) participants aged between 18-61. The data of the study was collected via Demographic Information Form, Inventory of Interpersonal Problems Circumplex Scales-Short Form (IIP-32), Young Schema Questionnaire Short Form-3 (YSQ-SF3) and Schema Mode Inventory (SMI). Correlation Analysis was performed to investigate the relationships among variables and significant associations were found between all the variables. Multiple hierarchical regression analysis was used to investigate the predictive role of early maladaptive schemas and dysfunctional coping modes on dominance and submission. Furthermore, hierarchical regression models were tested with all these variables to predict the Partner-Dominance and Partner-Submissiveness measured by the Interpersonal Problems Inventory- Observer Version. Results revealed that Unrelenting Standards, Impaired Limits, Disconnection schema domains and Overcompensation mode predict Dominance; Impaired Autonomy, Disconnection schema domains and Compliant Surrender mode predict Submission; Disconnection, Other Directedness, Impaired Limits schema domains and Overcompensation, Compliant Surrender mode and Dominance predict Partner-Dominance; Disconnection, Unrelenting Standards schema domains, Compliant Surrender mode and Submision predict Partner-Submission. The findings were discussed within the scope of the literature and their clinical implications were evaluated.
