The mediating role of self-perception in the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and romantic relationship beliefs

The purpose of this research is to examine the mediating role of self-perception in the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and romantic relationship beliefs. The research was carried out with the participation of 300 participants (51.3% female, 48.7% male). The data in the study were obtained with the Personal Information Form, Young Schema Questionnaire-Short Form-3, Romantic Relationship Beliefs Scale and Social Comparision Scale. According to findings of the study, it was found that the early maladaptive schemas negatively related to self-perception and positively related to romantic relationship beliefs. Findings from the research reveals that male participants were found to have more irrational relationship beliefs than female participants. With regard to irrational relationship beliefs, the scores of participants who are engaged have higher scores at the mind reading sub-dimension of the Romantic Relationship Beliefs Scale. The model proposed for the romantic relationship beliefs of the participants was tested with the Structural Equation Model. SPSS 25 and AMOS 25 programs were used to analyze the data. Structural models were tested and verified, based on the validated measurement models of the model that was first created in the research. It was determined that the fit indices of the model fit well and the coefficients obtained were statistically significant. It was determined that the structural model established for the mediating role of self-perception in the relationship between early maladaptive schemas and the romantic relationship beliefs variable had a good fit, and it was seen that self-perception had a mediating role in the model.
