Investigation of antioxidant properties of some algae isolated from aquatic habitats in Erzincan Ekşisu recreational area

Abstract (EN)

Material and Methods: Algae were isolated by mechanical isolation method and their antioxidant properties, total flavonoid and phenolic compounds were examined by DPPH, FRAP, ABTS methods. Results: The total phenolic content, flavonoid content, (FRAP) reducing power activity and (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity of methanol extracts of Mougeotia parvula, Anabeana fertilissima, Spirogyra micropunctata, S. pratensis and S. mirabilis were examined and the results were evaluated comparatively. The total phenolic content of the algae in the study was found to be between 6.61 and 25.05 mgGAE/g extract, and the total flavonoid amounts were found to be in the range of 2.95-14.42 mg QE/g extract. Among the isolated algae species, S. mirabilis was the richest in terms of phenolic substances and flavonoids. The highest activity in DPPH radical scavenging activity was also observed in S. mirabilis. The lowest activity was observed in M. parvula and A. fertilissima. In the FRAP test, the highest absorbance value was recorded in S. mirabilis with 47.14 mg TE/g extract, and the lowest value was recorded in M. parvula with 22.10. Conclusion: As a result of antioxidant tests, good antioxidant properties were observed in some of the studied algae, and significant results were recorded in total phenolic and flavonoid amounts. In this respect, the pharmaceutical properties detected in the algae that are the subject of the study have the potential to be a source for future studies with detailed compound analyzes.
