Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT Introduction and Aim Gastroenteritis is one of the most important causes of mortality and morbidity in 0-5 years old children, especially in newborns, worldwide. Rotaviruses are the most important cause of acute gastroenteritis seen in young children. Depending on Rotavirus infection, approximately 611 000 deaths ocur worldwide each year. Rotavirus infection has been found more frequently in December, January, February and March in Central Europe and in our country, which is located in the northern hemisphere. It was determined that Rotavirus infection is frequent in rainy and cold seasons May, June and July. Adenoviruses have been reported to be the second most common cause of infantile gastroenteritis. Adenoviruses have been shown to be responsible for 5-15% of gastroenteritis cases seen in preschool children and in the newborn. There is no relationship between the frequency of adenovirus and seasons, and diarrhea can be seen at any time of year. In this study, it was aimed to gain the literature on the data of rotavirus and adenovirus infection in 0-5 year old children between 2012-2016 who were admitted to Erzincan Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital with diarrhea according to their geographical characteristics and time of infection. Material and Method In the study, the positivity of rotavirus and adenovirus antigens in stool specimens of 0-5 year old children who were admitted to Erzincan University Mengücek Gazi Training and Research Hospital between January 2012 and December 2016 with acute diarrhea was retrospectively examined. Repeated samples were excluded from th estudy. Rotavirus and adenovirus antigens in stool samples of patients were investigated in according to the manufacturer's recommendations with immunochromatographic method (RDS Rotavirus test kit (Turkey), Ecotest Adenovirus Rapid Test Device (AssureTech, Zhejiang, China). The distribution of rotavirus and adenovirus gastroenteritis according to years, months, seasons, age groups, gender and geographical characteristics were evaluated. Analysis of the data was done by the package program IBM SPSS Statistics 17.0 (IBM Corporation, Armonk, NY, USA). Results Of the 3700 observations performed on rotavirus, 537 (14.5%) were rotaviruses, and 3372 observations of adenoviruses, detected 208 (6.2%) adenoviruses. Conclusion In conclusion, we have evaluated the distribution of rotavirus and adenovirus gastroenteritis according to the years, months, seasons, age groups, gender and geographical characteristics in accordance with the literature.
