Abstract (EN)

The ancient city of Smyrna, located in Bayraklı district of Izmir, is a city that has been inhabited from the Bronze Age until the end of the Classical Period. The current thesis named ''Development of the Residential Architecture of Smyrna'' focuses on the residential architecture of the city and its development, between the Bronze Age and the end of the Classical period. This study is also concentrates on comparing the residential architecture of the ancient city of Smyrna with the other ancient cities in the Aegean world. This work is created with the help of the ancient city of Smyrna's excavations, scientific publications and current data on residential architecture with an objective perspective. When the residential architecture of the ancient city of Smyrna is examined, the general characteristics of the periods and the architecture of the other ancient Aegean cities are generally in line except for the examples of the Oval house and the double megaron which were the pioneers of their age. With the migration of the Aegean Sea Tribes (12th-13th century B.C.) cultural interaction between the two sides of the Aegean basin was inevitable. This situation is also reflected in the civilian architecture. The ancient city of Smyrna's city plan was not Hippodomic, but it is clearly seen that there is a main street in North-South direction and a street plan that was located perpendicular to it. However, it is thought that the houses were built within a certain system of parcels.
