Abstract (EN)

The theme of this work is superimposing ceiling structures with revolving axesof five mosques in the Mahmudiye township of Eskişehir province. Such a study is thefirst one of its kind in this particular location. The oldest mosque was built in 1834, andthe others are dated 1932, 1940, 1950 and 1952.Different general terms used for superimposing ceiling structures which causedmisunderstandings and confusions. Therefore, in this work the term originally used byCanan Parla is taken up as ?superimposing ceiling structures with revolving axes?which we assume this specific ceiling structure is better explained with such a term.Within the context of the thesis, this sort of ceiling and its different geometricforms of superimposing layers were elaborated in line with some similar examples ofearly Anatolian tumulus (barrow) tombs as well. Furthermore, these particular woodenceiling structures used in houses, seraglios, temples, mosques and in various religiousbuildings of different faiths were also taken up in terms of their functional similarities, interactions and whether they constitute varying reasons of existence. It was realisedthat the same language of symbolism was used almost in every such building. On the other hand, in examples of the Turkish Architecture, mostly in smallerand rarely in bigger scale mosques, such a structure of ceilings were used not only forprestigious reasons but also and primarily as a symbol of heaven to substitute domestructures which would consume more resources. The subject matter five mosques and their ceiling structures constituteresemblances in terms of construction techniques with other older and newerapplications in Anatolia. This important conclusion highlights that such a specificceiling technique deeply goes back to ancient times and still continues to beimplemented at present.
