Abstract (EN)

The current research aimed to determine if procalcitonin is a useful biomarker for coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and to make predictions about its potential for use in discriminating between moderate, severe, and critical COVID-19 illness. Eighty COVID-19 patients representing a range of illness severity were enrolled in the research (mild, severe, and critical). In addition, 55 healthy volunteers served as the study's control group. Patients with COVID-19 had substantially increased procalcitonin levels compared to the control group. In addition, there was a considerable rise from mild to moderate to severe in the procalcitonin levels of COVID-19 individuals. The levels of creatinine, ferritin, and D. dimer in COVID-19 patients were significantly higher than in controls. However, no significant variation in urea levels was seen between COVID-19 patients and controls. In conclusion, procalcitonin can be used as excellent biomarker in the prognosis of COVID-19 with good percentages of sensitivity and specificity
