The role of social studies in raising effective citizenship

There is no definitive definition of the concept of citizenship. Because in terms of the subject of citizenship, many sciences are an area of interest, and every science has explained this concept within the framework of its own field. However, from the studies on the subject of citizenship, we can see what citizenship means and what it aims to do. Citizenship has been defined on the basis of concepts such as living in a common homeland, nationality, rights and responsibility, belonging and being natural. It has not been easy for people to obtain this status from antiquity until today. We can say that the citizenship status gained by challenging struggles occupies an important place in the life of mankind. While citizenship initially recognized the right of the individual to live in a state, these rights increased in time in favor of the individual in civil, political, social and many other fields. From the 19th century on, the states have now protected their citizenship rights by constitution and conventions, and a kind of humanity has begun to collect the fruits of its struggle from Antiquity to today. Today, we can say that these rights exist at the center of the lives of individuals. Because citizenship states the mutual status of the individual with the state. Many governments in the world are making efforts to ensure that citizens are qualified and effective when planning their future. They develop educational policies to train individuals in this way. They prepare training programs. Our country also wants to build on adequate, effective and equipped citizens in future planning. We can say that in many countries and countries around the world, citizenship education is provided through schools and in schools through social studies lessons. One of the ultimate aims of the social studies course is to educate effective and qualified citizens who are aware of their rights and responsibilities. While carrying out this aim, citizenship education is formal to individuals, 4-7. The class provides social studies curriculum with curriculum. The social studies course aims to provide individuals with effective citizenship competences and tries to acquire knowledge, skills and value for this purpose. The aim of this study is to determine the opinions of prospective teachers who are studying in İnönü University Faculty of Education, Basic Education Class and Social Studies Department about the role of social studies lesson in effective citizenship education. Inonu University was the universe of this research which was used as a quantitative research method. In the 2018-2019 academic year, Inonu University Faculty of Education constitutes a total of 400 teacher candidates, 201 students in the Department of Primary Education and 199 in the Department of Social Studies Education. After completing the theoretical part of the research, five-point Likert-type scale was prepared and applied to prospective teachers. As a result of the study, it is observed that the teacher candidates' perceptions about the role of social studies lesson in effective citizenship education do not differ according to the gender variable. In addition, the opinions of pre-service teachers about the role of value and social studies course are found to be more positive than social studies teacher candidates.
