Two adaptations of Euripides' Medea in contemporary Irish theatre

In this study, two adaptations of Euripides' Medea, Brendan Kennelly's Medea and Marina Carr's play By the Bog of Cats… in contemporary Irish theatre are analyzed. This study consists of an introduction, three main chapters and a conclusion. In the first chapter, the myth of Medea and Euripides' play Medea are analyzed in terms of the myths' adaptation to the contemporary world. The second chapter offers a detailed description of adaptation and presents adaptation theories. In the third chapter, two adaptations of Euripides' Medea, Brendan Kennelly's Medea version and Marina Carr's play By the Bog of Cats… in contemporary Irish theatre are examined in terms of alienation and the place of women in society. The aim of this thesis study is to analyze the social necessities of adapting the play Medea to contemporary Irish theatre. Key Words: Medea, Euripides, Adaptation, Brendan Kennelly, Marina Carr.
