Abstract (EN)
Although Turkey applied for membership in the European Union (EU), whose foundations were laid in 1957, in 1959, it could not become a full member. After Turkey became a candidate country, it was included in the negotiations. Although the process that started again in 2003 was positive, it has entered a negative momentum since 2012. Turkey participated in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 1975 to show itself as a European state and won first place in 2003. The background of this first place was evaluated as a positive reflection of the relations with the EU. In 2012, relations with the EU were interrupted and Turkey left this competition by putting its relations with Europe to the background. In this study, Eurovision news is discussed within the scope of the reflection of the Eurovision Song Contest on Turkey's EU relations in printed newspapers. Within the scope of the study, Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, and Yeni Şafak newspapers in 2003 and 2012 were examined as samples. The related news in the newspapers were analyzed using framing analysis method and how they were framed was examined. According to the findings, the reflection of the harmonization process with the EU on the Eurovision Song Contest was discussed in the newspapers published in 2003, which was the first Eurovision Song Contest, and in 2012, the last date of participation. This reflection differed in mainstream, left, and right newspapers. Keywords: Eurovision Song Contest, European Union, Framing Theory, Framing Analysis
