A feminist study of euripides' Medea and Pasolini's Medea

Medeia is a famous tragedy written by Euripides that has survived from Ancient Greece and continues to be staged. Medeia, who even risks committing murder for her husband's sake, loses everything she fought for and turns into a child murderer in the eyes of everyone, and the crisis she experiences forms the essence of Euripides' work. The work is also important in terms of reflecting the West's view of the East in its period. The character of Medeia, who portrays a strong, lonely but independent woman living in the ancient period, and her actions are in the nature of rebellion rather than submitting to the double standards brought by gender norms. In a context that is not independent of the time it was written, the depression and struggle against the pressure, exclusion and hypocrisy created by the patriarchal system have made Medeia stand out as a feminist and revolutionary icon today. The aim of this study is to analyze the Medeia tragedy of Euripides on a feminist axis and to reveal the resistance to the gender roles and prejudices imposed on women in the male- dominated Ancient Greek period. By examining Pier Paolo Pasolini's 1969 film adaptation of the same name within the framework of feminist analysis, it is desired to investigate the effects of myths and archetypes on cinematic representations of women and the focus of resistance to patriarchal codes. It is not possible for us to ignore the importance of works of art in constructing social codes and ensuring their continuity in society by reproducing or destroying them. Therefore, while tracing the patriarchal codes in society, it is essential to analyze literary works and cinema from a feminist perspective. Analyzing and criticizing the forms of representation in the historical context paves the way for change by opening up space for women in masculine historiography. For this reason, it is of great importance to analyze a strong female character like Medeia, written in the Ancient Greek period in a patriarchal system, and to examine its reflection on the present, and to examine the adaptation of Pasolini, one of the most cult and influential directors of modern cinema, from a feminist perspective.
