Abstract (EN)
As a response to housing shortages and land constraints, there has been an increasing dependence on high-rise structures due to the rapid urbanization and population growth in cities worldwide. Nevertheless, the influence of high-rise living on the satisfaction and well-being of residents continues to be a multifaceted issue. The objective of this study is to examine the factors that influence resident satisfaction in high-rise buildings in the swiftly developing district of Başakşehir, Istanbul. By investigating the psychological, social, and physical components of high-rise living. This investigation will investigate the perspectives and experiences of residents with respect to amenities, security, social interaction, and community involvement. The results of this study will enhance comprehension of the intricate relationship between resident satisfaction and high-rise living, offering valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and developers to establish more sustainable and livable high-rise environments. To achieve this goal, a comprehensive survey was administered to a randomly selected group of residents residing in high-rise buildings within Kayabaşı mahallesi Başakşehir, Istanbul. The questionnaire explored a wide range of factors, including safety and security, perceptions of safety within the building and the surrounding neighborhood, including measures taken by residents and the local authorities, the presence of security systems, and emergency response protocols. Privacy Residents' experiences and expectations regarding privacy in their units and communal spaces, such as the level of noise isolation, the presence of curtains or blinds, and the overall layout of the building. Social Interaction and Connections, The role of social interactions and community building in fostering resident well-being, including the availability of common areas, organized events and activities, and opportunities for residents to meet and interact with one another. Physical Attributes of Building Materials: The impact of building materials and design on overall satisfaction and comfort, such as the quality of construction, the durability of materials used, the availability of natural light, and the effectiveness of insulation against external factors like heat and sound. The survey also explored residents' preferences and suggestions for improvement in these areas, aiming to gather comprehensive and insightful data to inform future decisions related to the high-rise buildings in the designated neighborhood. Qualitative data collection methods are exploratory in nature and help to reveal the depth of resident's experiences, views, and beliefs. The researcher chose to conduct a structured survey. This is because a structured survey is a qualitative method of data collection. It is used in most of the social sciences, and it is associated with new research areas or areas that have no defined research tradition. Semi-structured interviews are also useful in the exploratory phase of survey research. It allows flexibility in data collection since the researcher can probe or explore additional responses when necessary. Resident satisfaction in high-rise buildings refers to the positive evaluations and feelings residents have about their lives in these tall buildings. Literature explains that these evaluations and feelings are largely determined by the extent to which fulfilled needs and desires, as well as the living characteristics. The aim is to find the high-rise buildings with the largest and the least number of residents. The results of the survey conducted among the residents of high-rise buildings revealed an overall level of contentment and satisfaction. However, the core focus of the thesis is to underscore the significance of thoroughly investigating the areas of dissatisfaction in order to bring to light any potential design flaws and identify areas that require improvement. It is imperative to delve deeper into the specific factors that contribute to negative experiences in order to enable architects and planners to take proactive measures in creating living environments that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also more gratifying, centered on the needs and experiences of individuals. This thesis underscores the imperative necessity for a considerably more elaborate and comprehensive comprehension of resident satisfaction in towering high-rise buildings. While the pervasive sentiment of contentment may indeed prevail, it is absolutely vital to diligently confront and rectify the intrinsic issues that diminish and mar the otherwise positive and gratifying experience.
