The relationship between marital adjustment and religiosity: The case of Adana

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between marital adjustment and religiosity. The sample of the study is consisted of 418 individuals who were married for at least one year at the time of the study. The data were collected by demographic information form, Dyadic Adjustment Scale and Religious Living Scale. In addition, attitude items, prepared by the researcher, in relation to the feeling the influence of religion on marriage, gender roles in marriage, attributions to spouse, and relative relationships were also included. The collected data were analyzed by Pearson Moment and Spearman Rho correlation analysis, independent groups t-test, one way ANOVA, one way MANOVA, and multiple linear regression analysis. According to the results, there is a positive, significant but low-level correlation between marital adjustment and religiosity. Likewise, it is determined that there is a positive, generally significant and low-level correlation between the religiosity and sub-dimensions of marital adjustment and the marital adjustment and sub-dimensions of religiosity. The other findings of the research are as follows: 1. There is a significant relationship between marital adjustment and the variables in relation to the feeling the influence of religion on marriage. 2. There is a significant relationship between variables in relation to the gender roles in marriage, attributions to spouse, and relative relationships with marital adjustment and religiosity. 3. Men's marital adjustment level is higher than women. 4. Those who have arranged marriages are more religious than the couple-initiated ones. 5. As the age of marriage increases, marital adjustment increases and religiosity decreases. 6. Some groups regarding age difference with partner differ in terms of marital adjustment. 7. As the duration of marriage increases, religiosity increases. 8. Religiosity increases as the number of children and the number of children planned increases. 9. Marital adjustment of employed men is higher than employed women. 10. Unemployed women's religiosity level is higher than employed women. 11. Marital adjustment level of participants whose wifes are unemployed is higher than the employed ones. 12. Marital adjustment level of men whose wifes are unemployed is higher than the women whose husbands are unemployed. 13. The religiosity level of women whose income are less than their husband's is higher than women whose income are more than their husband's. 14. The religiosity level of the participants who have not premarital sexual experience is higher than the participants who have premarital sexual experience. 15. The religiosity level of the participants who doesn't approve premarital sex is higher than the participants who approve premarital sex and are undecided. The religiosity level of the participants who approve premarital sex is higher than the participants who are undecided. 16. Marital adjustment and religiosity level are higher for those who have not experience extramarital sex than those who have experience extramarital sex. 17. The religiosity level of those who approve and disapprove extramarital sex is higher than those who are undecided. 18. As the level of happiness of the parents' marriage increases, both marital adjustment and religiosity level increase. These emerging research findings are discussed and interpreted in the context of the relevant literature, and suggestions have been made for future work.
