Investigation of shopping centers in the context of universal design and sustainable design principle: Examples of Kayseri shopping center

Shopping centres are the structures that have an important place in social life and consumption today and where we meet many of our needs. The concept of Universal Design, which cares about the participation of all users other than the standard user group in the architectural design of shopping centres, aims to meet the expectations, wishes and needs of different user groups. In this context, it has gained importance to evaluate the design of shopping centres with a high number and diversity of users with a universal design approach. Today, changing and developing technology and living standards have increased the need for energy, understanding that fossil fuel resources are not exhaustible and environmentally friendly, increasing energy requirements in parallel with structural activities and changing lifestyle, environmental and waste problems arising as a result of urbanisation have brought the concept of "sustainability" to the agenda. The concept of sustainability, which is based on economy, environment and social components, has been included in the discipline of architecture together with many disciplines, and has enabled sustainable design and green building design sensitive to environmental problems. Sustainable design, which aims to provide a healthy, safe, durable, economical and comfortable living level for the user, cares about the effective and efficient use of energy, water, soil, air, material and resources, recycling of materials and waste control throughout the service life of the building. The aim of this study is to examine shopping centres serving in different parts of Kayseri city in the context of universal design and sustainable design. Within the scope of the study, the development of shopping centres in the historical process, universal design and sustainable design principles, the use of green building certificates in buildings are examined, and suggestions for the design of shopping centres, which have a significant impact on social life and consumption today, are presented.
