In vitro fertilization in Balb/c and C57BL/6J strains and heterologous zygote transfer-1 (the stages form neonatal period to natural zygot production)

ABSTRACT Airway obstruction as a result of benign thyroid growth may necessitate urgent intervention. In times of lacking symptamatology this problem may be overlooked by phycians. Patients with this problem may be misdiagnosed and as a result treated inappropriately. In this conditions quality of life worsens. In some studies thyroidectomy done to alleviate airway obstruction results in improved respiratory functions. But in these studies the degree of symptamatology, radiologic data and indications for thyroidectomy is unfortunately lacking. Our study aims to investigate the relief of airway obstruction in patients with benign thyroid pathology undergoing surgery. 50 patients with benign thyroid pathology undergoing surgery were included in this study in Ankara University School of Medicine Department of Surgery. Preoperative studies taken into account were dyspnea score, trachea diameter, thyroid USG, respiratory function tests and objective criteria for upper airway obstruction. Patients were called upon after surgery to assess respiratory function. In our study it was shown that respiratory function was well correlated with the degree of symptamatology, tracheal diameter, and thyroid volume, and respiratory function tests turned out to be normal after thyroidectomy. With these results we suggest that a carefully obtained history taking, plain radiograph of trachea, thyroid volume and respiratory function tests give critical information regarding airway obstruction. 55
