86 Vm. SUMMARY The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCOs) ingestion in different dosages on anaerobic performance. With this aim 10 elite wrestlers from Gazi University School of Physical Education and Sport were participated voluntarily as subject. Their mean age was 23.10±2.08 years. The subjects participated in three cycle ergometer exercises on separate occasions with one week interval during 3 weeks. Each exercise occasion involved 125% max VO2 of subjects with 60 rpm on cycle ergometer, until they were exhausted. Two hours before each test, the subjects consumed either a placebo (control), or solution of 0.25 gr/kg body weight (Di) or a solution 0.35 of gr/kg body weight with 500 ml fruit juice. Venous blood samples were taken before pre and post ingestion and 1, 5, 10 and 15 min. following the exercise. Mean and Standart Deviation scores and differences between datas were analized by Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) Test at PO.01 significance level. Sources of the differences between values were determined by using Tukey Test. At the end of the study, results showed that NaHC03 ingestion fecilitated to increase anaerobic performance significantly (PO.01). The differences between trials were determined as follows; 3.95 min. between placebo and Di (0.25 gr/kg NaHCC^) 1.66 min. between plasebo and D2 (0.35 gr/kg NaHCCh) and 2.29 min. between Di and D2 (PO.l). The reason of differences between Di and D2 may be explained by means of side effect of over dosage of NaHC03. Therefore they were not able to show their maximum performance.87 Results also showed that NaHCCb ingestion significantly increased pre-exercise HCO3- and pH of Di and D2 (P<0.01). Although HLa levels of D, and D2 were significantly higher than placebo (P<0.01), there was no important decrease pH levels of them regarding to placebo. The results suggested that NaHC03 can be used as an effective ergogenic aid and support the speculation that the increased extracellular buffering afforted by NaHCO3 ingestion facilitated efflux of H+ from working tissues, thus increasing pH and hence offsetting fatique.
