?EVALUATION OF THE ANTIFUNGAL ANDHISTOPATHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF VARIOUS FINALIRRIGATION SOLUTIONS?Dt. Gulnara Alimzhanova-KoyluSUMMARYMTAD is a new root canal final cleansing solution.Its antifungal activity has not been evaluated.In this study, an experimental solution similar toMTAD in composition (Experimental solution I), and anotherexperimental solution also similar to MTAD, but added fluconazole(Experimental solution II) have been evaluated for their antifungaleffects and their biocompatibility. These experimental solutionsand MTAD, used together with NaOCl or alone, were comparedwith MTAD and EDTA.For the microbiological part of the study, the modeldeveloped by Ãrstavik and Haapasalo was adopted and applied on346 human dentinal samples. Experimental solution I,Experimental solution II, MTAD and EDTA, either alone or incombination with NaOCl, were tested for their antifungal activitieson C. albicans at 1, 5, 30 and 60 minute applications.NaOCl+EDTA and EDTA effectively disinfected thesamples in 30 and 60 minutes, respectively. These durations werenot found clinically acceptable. Clinically acceptable duration ofeffectiveness, which are 1 and 5 minutes, has been mostsatisfactorily attained with the use of the Experimental solution II.The antifungal effectiveness attained by MTAD and theExperimental solution I was similar to each other.In order to evaluate whether the experimentalsolutions could be used clinically as safely as the conventionalsolutions, biocompatibility tests were performed on rats. In 48hours post-operatively, similar inflammatory responses were foundin the histopathological sections of all tested materials. At 1 and 4-weeks post-operatively, the acute inflammatory reaction wassubstituted with fibrotic activation (healing). It took longer for theExperimental solution II to heal than Experimental solution I andMTAD.
