Abstract (EN)
Accurate classification of the durability of rocks is extremely important as it directly affects their service life in engineering projects. The durability of the rocks is generally examined by accelerated weathering tests such as freezing-thawing, salt crystallization and wetting-drying, and they are also classified according to durability determination methods such as dry and saturated uniaxial compressive strength ratio, saturation coefficient, slake durability index and static rock durability index. It is very important that the results obtained from the accelerated weathering tests of the rocks are compatible with the durability classes obtained from different durability classification methods. In addition, the results obtained from different durability determination methods should be expected to be compatible with the long-term field performances of the rocks. In the durability determination methods, the physical properties of rocks such as water absorption by weight and weight of dry surface saturated volume, mechanical properties such as dry and saturated point load strength index, and accelerated weathering test results such as mass loss after salt crystallization are used as input for durability determination, the static rock durability index is more complicated and comprehensive than other methods. When the previous studies are examined, it is seen that the data obtained from the static rock durability classification system does not give concordant results in some studies with accelerated weathering tests and long term field performances of the rocks. In this study, the cause of insufficiency of static rock durability index durability classification method is investigated with the studies carried out on 6 volcanic rock types obtained from different quarries which are currently being produced in crushing and block stone production in Izmir Aliağa, Foça, Menemen and Çeşme regions. In this method, the parameters used as input have been changed and many equations have been tried. As a result, a new durability determination method called Modified Static Rock Durability Index is proposed which can make more accurate classification according to the durability of the volcanic rocks.
