Abstract (EN)

Mother-Adolescent Relations across Contexts Representing Different CulturalValue Orientations and Socio-Economic ConditionsBanu R. HantalThe present study investigates whether mother-adolescent relations differ acrosssocial contexts. Effects of social context on mother-adolescent relations were examinedusing cross- and intra-cultural comparisons. Kagitcibasi?s three family models providedthe main framework for comparisons. Comparisons were conducted between German,Turkish middle class and Turkish rural samples representing three different familypatterns. Mother-adolescent relations in Turkish urban low SES were also explored.Perceived parental acceptance-rejection, positive valence of the mother-adolescentrelationship, frequency of conflict, adolescent?s support for mother and maternalexpectancies were the subjects of comparisons. Besides these comparisons, theassociations between these study variables were assumed in a mother-adolescentrelationship model and tested. Results of the study revealed both differences andsimilarities in mother-adolescent relations across contexts. All the findings are discussedin the light of existing literature and Kagitcibasi?s theory of family models. Moreover, findings regarding parental acceptance and rejection are discussed concerning theconceptualization of parental acceptance-rejection construct and the implications forParental Acceptance-Rejection theory. Keywords: Parent-child relations, adolescence, social context, family models, parentalacceptance-rejection.
