Evaluation of the success of sagittal split ramus osteotomy with different techniques

Aim: In our study, by applying Obwegeser, Dal Pont, Hunsuck, Epker and Wolford modifications, which are frequently used in sagittal split ramus osteotomy, to sheep mandibles; It is aimed to compare the position of time, bad split and mandibular nerve. Material and Method: Sheep heads were placed on a specially designed platform without stripping the skin, subcutaneous and muscle tissue of 125 fresh sheep heads. The jaws are randomly divided into 5 main groups; After performing sagittal split ramus osteotomies with Obwegeser, Dal Pont, Hunsuck, Epker and Wolford modifications, the mean values, maximum, minimum and standard deviation values of the operation times were recorded. The location and number of bad splits on the jaws that occurred during sagittal split ramus osteotomy were recorded. The position of the mandibular nerve was determined after sagittal split ramus osteotomy. Results: A statistically significant difference was found between the mean values of the right and left times according to the groups (p<0.001). The highest mean value was obtained from the mean of the Wolford group, while the lowest mean value was obtained from the Epker group. There was no statistically significant difference between the distributions of the presence of right and left bad split and the position of the right and left nerves according to the groups (p>0.050). Conclusion: Especially in Wolford modification, although the operation time was longer, the bad split rate was less. Again, in the Wolford modification, it was observed that the mandibular nerve would be positioned more distally and the nerve damage would be less.
