An examination of attitudes towards physical education and sports course among students from different types of high schools

This study was conducted to investigate the attitudes of high school students studying in different high schools towards physical education course. This research was conducted using the descriptive survey model, one of the quantitative research methods. The population of the research consisted of high school students in the Şereflikoçhisar district of Ankara during the 2023-2024 academic year. The sample of the study consisted of 356 students selected through the sampling method and studying in six different high school types: Science High School, Anatolian High School, Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, Imam Hatip High School, Health Vocational High School, and Multi-Program High School. Participants signed a voluntary consent form. The demographic information form and the Physical Education Course Information Form scale were used as data collection tools in the study. The data were collected online using Google Forms. It was stated that the surveys were voluntary and that the data would be kept confidential. The collected data were analysed using the SPSS statistical programme. The skewness and kurtosis data analysis method was used to determine that the data were normally distributed. Various statistical methods, including frequency and percentage analyses, T-tests, ANOVA, and post hoc tests, were used in the analysis of demographic data and physical education course information form data. The results of the study showed that students' attitudes toward physical education were generally positive. Statistically significant differences were found in student attitudes based on demographic variables such as gender, school type, mother's and father's education level, participation in extracurricular activities, and regular participation in sports clubs. However, no significant differences were found based on age, grade level, family income, or whether there was a licensed athlete in the family. These findings provide important information about the factors influencing attitudes toward physical education.
