Determination of biological criteria of bean seed bug [Acanthoscelides obtectus (SAY) (col.:chrysomelidae: bruchinae)] in different bean varieties

Abstract (EN)
The relationship between the feeding behaviors, growth, development, and reproduction of the bean beetle [Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say)] on different registered bean varieties (Akın, Atmaca, and Berrak) produced in Turkey was investigated. The pre-oviposition, oviposition, and post-oviposition period durations, daily and total egg numbers, egg hatching time, larva, pupa, and adult period durations, sex ratio, and the rate of eggs reaching adulthood were studied to determine the life tables of A. obtectus. At the end of the experiment, it was found that the average egg period development duration of the pest was longer in the Akın (8.03±1.3 days) and Berrak (7.86±1.32 days) bean varieties than in the Atmaca (6.97±1.29 days) variety. It was shown that the pupa period durations of the Akın (9.97±1.69 days) and Berrak (11.09±1.9 days) bean varieties were statistically significantly longer than those of the Atmaca (7.88±1.05 days) bean variety. It was determined that the average pre-adult period duration of the pest in the Akın (37.98±2.82 days) and Berrak (39.24±2.48 days) bean varieties was statistically significantly longer than in the Atmaca (34.45±0.84 days) bean variety, while no significant differences were found in the average development durations of the pest's other periods. The sex ratios were calculated as 1.25:0.75 in the Akın variety, 1.1:0.9 in the Atmaca variety, and 1.27:0.72 in the Berrak variety, with no statistically significant differences in the distribution of females and males among the Akın, Atmaca, and Berrak varieties. The average reproductive success of the Akın (15.53 females/female) variety was found to be statistically significantly higher than that of the Atmaca (9.18 females/female) and Berrak (10.38 females/female) varieties through statistical analyses. It was determined that the Akın variety had a higher potential to produce more offspring at all ages. It was observed that the post-adult mortality rate of the pest in the Akın variety was statistically lower than in the Atmaca and Berrak varieties, indicating that the pest had a better chance of surviving longer after becoming an adult in the Akın variety.
