Time and space in feminist dystopias

This thesis aims to focus on the elements of time and space in feminist dystopias. Dystopia, as a genre of literature, which was used for the first time in 1868 by the English philosopher John Stuart Mill will be analyzed within its own historical context. Also, the method of how female authors change and convert this literary genre into a feminist perspective will be examined to show dystopias' changing aspects which are affected by gender ideologies. This study theoretically will center upon the genre of dystopia in the reference to the fields of women and gender studies and feminist literary criticism. Some feminist dystopias by female authors will be analyzed in terms of these elements, especially works of Turkish, American and English literature will be used. Finally, in this analysis, perception of time and space in feminist dystopias will be studied in terms of sociological and cultural theories and relations between time, space and freedom will be discussed, too.
