Abstract (EN)

The reailty which is presented and constantly reproduced by the mass media in a fictional, stereotyped and distorted manner is being widely accepted by the greater society and thus becoming the normal. One of the mass media instruments which makes this reproduced reality accepted is the magazine journals. The main problematic of this study are i) how the magazine journals present the women; ii) which woman image they are trying to impose; and iii) how the feminist movement in Turkey affect the presentation of women in the magazine journals. Hence, the way the women are presented in the magazine journals has been studied within the frame of feminist theory. All the magazine journals published in the post-Republic era has been taken as the scope of the study and these journals within the scope has been sub-categorized according to i) similiraties to each other; ii) publication periods; iii) the preferences of the Governments regarding the international relations; and iv) the turning points in the feminist movements. Samples from this sub-catogorized scope have been selected by the method of Systematic Randomized Sampling. 186 issues of 45 sample journals have been studied. In this study which is in the model of general screening, the method of content analysis has been used in order to answer the questions in the study. It has been observed that the presentation of the women in the magazine journals has been affected by social and political developments rather than the feminist movements. It has been also observed that the participation of the women in the media at the managerial levels, even at the directoral levels, have shifted the image of the women presented in the journals. The adjectives emphasizing the sexuality of the woman have been still used, but on the other hand, the presentation of women as the sexual ikons have been declined, the average age of women mentioned in the columns have been raised, and columns about woman-politicians and businesswomen have begun to be published.
