Abstract (EN)

In this study, we analyzed the consciousness of the secondary science teachers on the environment, their classes and their genders. The sample of the study consist of 228 participants of whom 84 (% 36,8)are male and 144 are female having studied in Abant İzzet Baysal University in 2006-2007.In the study, the environmental consciousness scale (ECS) whose the adaptation process was completed was arranged as the likert scale. The ECS which consists of 53 items is composed of 6 subtitles as the taste of nature (9 items), environmental actions (9 items), the environmental threat (10 items), the use of nature by humans (10 items), the trust on science and technology (8 items), the support of policies on the population increase (7 items). The answer key of the sample was scaled from 1 (totally disagree) to 7 (totally agree) and the negative statements was marked reversely. The data obtained as a result of the application was analyzed by the SPSS 15,00. In the statistical analyse of the data, variance analysis (ANOVA) was used to determine the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable. The effect of the gender on the environment was researched by using the T-Test.According to the findings, considering the analysis of the ECS, statistically a considerable difference was reached between the subsections of the ECS and the classes. This difference is about the 4. grades. Also a considerable difference was found between the gender and some subsections of the ECS. This difference is in favour of male.In the research it was found out that the environmental consciousness of the prospective teachers was not affected by the courses they took. In this context it is likely to predict that the views, policies and the programmes on the environmental consciousness ought to be revised and reconstructed.
