Abstract (EN)
It is aimed at increasing the quality of education with this research in which the learning strategies used by elementary students while solving the problems of The Electricity in Our Lives Unit in Science and Technology lesson are determined. Again, in literature, one of the subjects which elementary students, especially female students have problems with is electricity subject. Through this study, the determination of the learning strategies which constitutes one of the individual differences of students and its contribution to the success at problem solving in science and technology lessons are examined over the course of the study and it is considered that the basic learning difficulties of the students could be overcome by determining the learning strategies they used during the process. This study has the characteristics of descriptive research. In the course of the description of the situation, qualitative and quantitative methods (mixed method) were set to work together. In the course of qualitative research, the strategies that the students used in the class were observed and interviews with the students were carried out. In this sense, case study, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used. As for the quantitative research process, the academic success problem solving and learning strategies were determined with the scanning method. The elementary schools in Sorgun county in Yozgat province make up the limited universe of the research and 5th grade students in Mehmet Akif Ersoy Elementary School students in Sorgun who were randomly chosen from this universe make up the study samples. Within the scope of the study, Achievement Test of Science and Technology-1 (FTBT-1) and Achievement Test of Science and Technology-2 (FTBT-2) which were developed by the researcher, Specification Scale of Problem Solving Skills which was developed by Yaman (2003) and Rating Scale of General Learning Strategies which was developed by Öztürk (1995) were used over the course of acquiring the data.On the purpose of determining the learning strategies which the students used for solving the problems at science and technology lessons; percentage (%) and frequency (f) were used, Mann-Whitney U test was used for revealing the relationship of used learning strategies according to the gender characteristics of the students and Pearson?s Product-Moment Coefficient and Kendall?s Tau technique were profited while revealing the relationship between achievement with learning strategies and problem solving skills. The acquired data were interpreted in the .05 meaningfulness level. The students? worksheets, course books, notebooks and other materials used both in and out classroom were evaluated by using content analysis within the context of qualitative data analysis.In consequence of the study, it is observed that the students used their problem solving skills during the Electricity in Our Lives Unit. However; it is stated that gender characteristics are not effective on learning strategies and problem solving skills. It is specified in the research that the students who have interpretation, placing in the mind, cognition and remembering learning strategies have high achievement in both process and result evaluation; the students who have attention and repetition skills have high achievement in only result evaluation. On the other hand, while there is not a relationship between their achievement in result evaluation and affective strategies, there is a negative relationship with their process evaluation achievement.Key words: Learning strategies, electricity in our lives unit, science technology courses, problem-solving skills.
