The effect on success, attitude and scientific process skills of the use of scienctific literacy developing activities in the unit named "systems of our body" in science and technology course

The name of science course has been modified as science and technology course by national ministry of education in 2005. Thus, important changes have been made in curriculum. One of those basic features of the new science and technology education in the curriculum is science literacy. The purpose of science and technology curriculum has been determined that each student will be science literate when they graduate from primary school. Science literate can be defined as people who are aware of the relation between science and technology, society and the environment and those who know the concepts, principles, theories of scientific knowledge and those who can understand scientific process. Individuals being literate in science have the benefit of a number of large-scale and small scales.Individuals, who can find scientific solutions to the problems, criticize events, who knows how to reach and apply the scientific knowledge and who can query the information they encounter in a scientific perspective are essential people to develop their communities. In this study, attitudes and values from the lower dimensions of science literacy towards science and technology, key science concepts and the dimension of science process skills are emphasized.The purpose of this search is to investigate the effects of the use of science literacy developer activities on students' academic achievements and attitudes toward science and technology lesson and the effects on the scientific process skills in the course of science and technology in the unit?? Systems of our body?? The study group consists of 7th grade students of a primary school in Buca, İzmir. Two classes have been chosen as the experimental (n = 35) and the control (n = 35) groups and semi-experimental pattern with pretest-posttest control group was used.In the process of experimental application with 30 hours, experimantal group was taught by developer activities in science literacy whereas control group was taught by the activities in the curriculum of science and technology.As a means of data collection in this research ?Systems of Our Body Achievement Test", "Scale of Science and Technology Course `Attitude ?and "Scale of Scientific Process Skills ?were used. Additionally, to determine the scientific process skills level of the experimental and control groups by means of interviews, semi-structured interview questions were developed and applied. The data collection instruments were applied in both groups? students before and after the experimental process.Obtained from analysis of data was carried out using the SPSS program. As a result of the analysis of data, students' academic achievement levels related to the unit in the control and experimental groups, attitudes toward science and technology, scientific process skills and technology to the terms of levels determined to be significant difference in favor of the experimental group.This research which has been carried out is considered to lead on new studies and such practices are considered to help to determine the effectiveness on primary school students.
