Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of the vitamin d receptor (VDR) gene polymorphism in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome. A hundred female patients who were admitted to Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation departmant of Bülent Ecevit University between July 2012 and August 2013 and diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and hundred age-matched healthy female as controls were enrolled in this study. Patients who have chronic diseases and drug use which may affect the vitamin D metabolism are excluded from the study. Weight and height were measured and body mass index (BMI) was calculated for all participant. All patients were evaluated for severity pain by visual analog scale (VAS), and the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) to test disease activity. Vitamin D gene polymorphism were detected by PCR. In addition serum levels of parathormon and 25-OH vitamin D were investigated. There was statistically significant difference between two groups in terms of age (p=0.002). In the patient group, the frequency of smoking and alcohol use were at the rate of 30% and 8% respectively. Mean BMI in the patient and healthy volunteer groups were 27.40±5.83 and 27.20±5.02 there was no statistically significant difference between two groups (p= 0,375). FIQ score that was applied to patient group was 53,27±10,77 there was no statistically significant difference between the FIQ scores for patients with normal weight and obese patients (p= 0,456). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of vitamin D and PTH level (p= 0,056, p= 0,462, respecitvely). There were 33 patients with f allele and 167 patients with F allele in the study group. There were 35 patients with f allele and 165 patients with F allele in the control group. The genotype of the FokI polymorphism in the VDR gene was not statistically significant difference between study group and control group (p=0,790). As a result, our findings showed that the FokI polymorphism of the VDR gene was not associated with fibromyalgia syndrome.
