The opinions and thoughts on contemporary educational systems published in the magazin "Fikirler" (1929-1936)

Education and learning activities play a very important role in understanding the purpose of human existence. The existence of societies and states is only possible through the education systems that can carry them to the future. In this context, because of the traditional education system among the reasons of the Ottoman Empire's retreat, an intensive reforming effort has been made in this field. Since the Tanzimat period, important reforms were made in the field of education in the Ottoman Empire. However, the reforms were not sufficient. After the proclamation of the Republic, significant changes took place. At this point, education life has been one of the most important areas of the transformation movement carried out for modern nation-state construction. In this process of transformation, which took place on the axis of nationalism and secularism, republican cadres who thought that a modern society could be constructed with modern education systems followed the developments in the field of education in the West. The Fikirler magazine, which was put into publication in Izmir in this context, played a significant role in the introduction of modern education systems in the process of building the young republic. Modern education systems that are being applied in the world through articles published in the journal and translation articles have been introduced to the education staff and made aware of the developments. Evaluations on contemporary education systems published in the Fikirler magazine are examined in this study.
