Translation problems of film translation by synchronization

With this study, in which we have considered movie translation in the scope of translation studies, dubbing method, the most preferred form of film translation by the audience, is explicated meticulously by defining the place of film translation, which today has an important place in intercultural information transfer, in Turkey and in the world. After emphasizing that audio-visual synchronization should be paid attention in the process of dubbing, problematic subjects such as translation problems encountered in synchronization process, how to overcome these problems and why they are not overcome are expressed. In this context, German made movie ?Das Leben der Anderen?, which has cultural characteristics because of the fact that it looks into the history of a society, has been studied in comparison with its Turkish dubbed version named ?Başkalarının Hayatı?. In this study, numerous subjects such as problems that translator encounters, what kind of solutions he/she brings to these problems, linguistic and paralinguistic factors, and especially translation problems based on synchronization, have been exemplified and scrutinized. Translation problems encountered during synchronization comprise the main focus of the study, based on the observation and thesis that it is possible to have some unnatural expressions and losses in dubbing; that problems encountered result not only from differences between languages and cultures but also from paralinguistic factors and the effort to maintain synchronization and for this reason equivalence becomes difficult, and that methods used to overcome encountered problems cause distortions in integrity and meaning of the film. In the study conducted with this purpose, the factors affecting translator?s decision has been defined and effects of these decisions on the quality of dubbing have been questioned by exemplifying the German made movie and its Turkish dubbed version. A step is being taken towards the systematization of the results, derived from the comparative analysis of the films in the framework of descriptive translation approach, for the dubbing translation.
