Socio-economic problems of women hazelnut producers; a study on Giresun province

This thesis aims to investigate the socio-economic problems faced by women actively involved in hazelnut production in Giresun, Turkey. Most studies in the relevant literature focus on the economic issues of "working" women in hazelnut farming. These studies often center on women who are seasonal laborers or unpaid family workers. However, this study aims to fill a significant gap in the literature by focusing on the experiences and challenges faced by women in the role of "producers" of hazelnuts. In the context of the research, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 women registered in the Farmer Registration System who are engaged in hazelnut production in Giresun. The interviewed women complained about the low prices of hazelnuts and the inadequacy of government support. The data obtained from the interviews revealed that women are generally disadvantaged compared to their male siblings in the distribution of inheritance, they experience problems in harvesting and drying due to the challenging land structure of Giresun and the extremly rainy season, and that they work double shifts due to their domestic responsibilities in addition to their responsibilities related to hazelnut production.
