Abstract (EN)
AİM: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dyspepsia and orodental status of patients with functional dyspepsia. METHODS: This study was conducted prospectively between February and July 2018. 40 patients who diagnosed as functional dyspepsia (FD) according to Rome III criteria were taken as patient group. In order to measure the dyspepsia severity objectively, Glasgow dyspepsia severity score was applied to FD patients. 159 participant who were admitted to the Department of Oral Diagnosis of Ege University Faculty of Dentistry for orodental examine, questioned for stomach pain, burning, early saturation and fullness. 109 partcipant who responded negative to all of them were included as a control group and 50 participant who responded yes to any of them were taken as uninvestigated dyspepsia (UD) group in the study. Orodental examinations of all participants were performed by the same dentist, and a questionnaire was applied by the same person. RESULTS: When 149 participant examined; 40 of them were functional dyspepsia (26.8%), 109 of them were control group (73.2%), there was no statistically significant difference in terms of age, gender, marital status, BMI, smoking, alcohol use, and eating speed, number of daily teeth brushing , oral mucosal inflammation, dental erosion, number of missing teeth, decayed teeth, filled teeth and dental mobility (p> 0.05). In 45% of the functional dyspepsia group, the education level was elementary school, this rate was 23.9% in the control group. A statistically significant correlation was found between the low education level and functional dyspepsia (p = 0.012). In the control group, the use of dental floss percentage was found 22% and in the functional dyspepsia group was 2%, a statistically significant difference was found between the two groups (p: 0.005). Glasgow dyspepsia severity score is an objective measure of dyspepsia severity in FD. There was no statistically significant relationship between Glasgow dyspepsia severity score and age, gender, BMI, smoking, alcohol, number of teeth brushing, floss use, dental erosion, oral mucosal inflammation, missing teeth, decayed teeth and the number of filled teeth and eating speed (p> 0.05). In subgroup analysis, a significant relation was found between decayed teeth (p = 0.029), eating faster than 20 minutes (p: 0.043),oral mucosal inflammation (p: 0.007) and UD (n = 50). When the patients were analyzed with who had dyspepsia (uninvestigated and functional dyspepsia) and who had no dyspepsia, only a significant relationship was found between dental floss and dyspepsia (p:0,012), no statistically significant relationship was found with all other parameters. CONCLUSİON: This study is one of the rare prospective studies in the literature investigating the relationship between oral and dental health and dyspepsia. In our study, patients who were diagnosed with FD after the exclusion of organic pathologies were investigated by scoring both dyspepsia and oral and dental health; interestingly, there was no association between FD and orodental health. In addition, the validation study using the same parameters in the UD group also showed no association with dyspepsia except decayed teeth and oral mucosal inflammation.
