Relation of ghrelin and obestatin with functional dyspepsia

Functional dispepsia (FD) is the sense of pain and discomfort on upper abdominal region which is not due to any organic, systemic and metabolic reason. In this study we aim to determine the effects of serum and salivarial ghrelin and obestatin which has inverse effects with ghrelin on patients with FD.30 FD patients diagnosed according to Roma III criterions and healty control group which has similar age, height, weight, sex, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference/hip circumference proporties are included in this study. Active ghrelin, inactive ghrelin and obestatin levels were determined. In addition; serum cholesterol, triglyserid, height dancity lipoprotein (HDL), low dancity lypoprotein ( LDL) levels are measured and analysed statistically.Serum and salivarial desacyl (inactive) ghrelin and serum obestatin levels of FD patients were significantly higher than control group (p<0.05). Serum acyl ( active) ghrelin levels were tend to be higher, unsignificantly.Subgroups performed according to Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Salivarial inactive ghrelin and serum obestatin levels of H.pylori positive FD subgrup were significantly higher than control group (p<0.05). Comparison of H.pylori positive and negative subgroups of FD patients; serum inactive ghrelin levels were significantly high in H.pylori negative ones;serum and salivarial active ghrelin levels were unsignificantly high in H.pylori positive ones..In this study, we determined that serum and salivarial inactive ghrelin and serum obestatin levels are high in FD patients. Probably obestatin and inactive ghrelin acts in the same way and thus take role in the pathogenesis of FD.
